Sinds vanmiddag weten we dat de auto in ons land minstens 76 mille moet kosten &#8211; dankzij een hele boel BPM. De ware liefhebber laat zich daardoor niet afschrikken, want de WRX STI biedt een enorm prestatiepotentieel en zal menig duurdere auto het nakijken geven. Carnold duikt in de techniek van de nieuweling, en geeft antwoord op de vraag &#8216;hoe geeft Subaru invulling aan <em>Pure power in your control <\/em>?&#8217;<!--more-->Om die vraag te beantwoorden lichten we deze alinea uit het persbericht:\u00a0 &#8216;<em>Tijdens de tests heeft Subaru de prestaties van de carrosserie, het chassis en andere voertuigelementen maximaal doorontwikkeld en uiteindelijk tot een indrukwekkend geheel weten te smeden. Dit heeft de algehele prestaties van de WRX STI naar een ongekend hoog niveau getild. Precies zoals Subaru voor ogen had en mede dankzij de toepassing van AWD. Al deze ingredi\u00ebnten maken dat de WRX STI een krachtpatser is geworden die toch relatief eenvoudig in de hand is te houden<\/em>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Subaru wilde de wendbaarheid maximaliseren en de controleerbaarheid van het hoge vermogen vergroten. Daarbij hebben de ingenieurs zich gericht op drie pijlers: 1) Stuurrespons, 2) Grip van de achterbanden en 3) Verticale carrosseriebewegingen. Door deze drie te perfectioneren zou de wendbaarheid van de auto en de controleerbaarheid van het motorvermogen optimaal moeten zijn. Hoe hebben de heren ingenieurs dat voor elkaar gekregen? Ik citeer uit het persbericht:<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"left\">Verbetering van de stuurrespons<\/h2>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Zodra het stuurwiel wordt gedraaid, duurt het bij elke auto even voordat er een reactie volgt. Bij de nieuwe WRX STI is er alles aan gedaan om die vertraging zo veel mogelijk te elimineren. De stuurrespons is door onder meer diverse modificaties zoals hierna beschreven, gelijk aan die van een supersportauto. Belangrijk; dit is bereikt zonder dat daarbij de bruikbaarheid van de auto is opgeofferd.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Kortom, een zo direct mogelijke reactie waarbij de flexibiliteit zoveel mogelijk uit de stuurinrichting is verwijderd. Subaru heeft hiervoor een 125% stijvere torsiestang gemonteerd en de stuuroverbrenging directer gemaakt, van 15:1 naar 13:1. Ook de veren werden bijna een kwart stugger. Je zou verwachten dat de voortrein ontzettend rigide is geworden, maar volgens Subaru hoeven we niet te vrezen voor het gebruiksgemak en het rijcomfort, al zal dat laatste niet het USP van deze Subaru zijn. In totaal wed de laterale stijfheid is 14% groter, de totale rolstijfheid 24% groter geworden. Een flinke stap voorwaarts, dus.<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"left\">Grip van de achterbanden<\/h2>\n<p><em>Om het hoge vermogen van de motor maximaal te kunnen benutten, is het contact van de achterbanden met het wegdek essentieel. De achterbanden moeten dezelfde rol spelen als het standbeen van bijvoorbeeld een voetballer of een surfer. Als de carrosserie wild op en neer beweegt, fluctueert de druk op de banden. Die fluctuatie heeft een negatieve invloed op het stuurkarakter. De bussen van de wielophanging, maar ook het subframe is aanzienlijk stijver geworden ten opzichte van de vorige WRX STI. De achterste stabilisatorstang werd slechts 1mm dikker in diameter en meet nu 20mm. De achterveren werden maar 6% steviger, en ook de wielophanging is marginaal lager aan het subframe bevestigd (2,3mm). De stand van de schokdempers is wel gewijzigd, het onderste bevestigingspunt staat nu 10mm verder naar buiten. De stijfheid van de achterwielophanging is in totaal met 24% gestegen.<\/p>\n<p><!--[if gte mso
